A ‘deputy commander’ rank Naxalite, allegedly involved in four murders including the killing of three security personnel, was shot dead in an encounter on Tuesday in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region. Ratan Kashyap, alias Salam, 31, had a bounty of Rs 5.1 lakh on him.

The encounter took place in Mangnar forest around 35 km from the district headquarters of Dantewada.

Acting on information about the presence of 10 to 15 armed Maoists in Mangnar, a joint operation was undertaken by Bastar Fighters, District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)’s Young Platoon (YP).

“During the exchange of fire, Salam, a Todma Militia Platoon Deputy Commander/Amdai Area Committee Member, was killed,” said Gaurav Rai, Superintendent of Police, Dantewada district.

In 2020, Salam was involved in an IED attack at Mardum in Bastar district, where two police personnel were killed, and in another attack where a police officer died. In 2021, he was involved in another IED blast in Malewahi in Dantewada, where a civilian was killed and eight others were injured. He was wanted in nine cases of Naxal-related activities.
