Elderly couple in Uttar Pradesh shot dead during clash between rival groups, 8 hurt

An elderly couple was shot dead and eight others sustained injuries in Uttar Pradesh on Monday in a clash that erupted between two groups allegedly as a follow-up to an old rivalry, the police said.

The police said the deceased have been identified as Ishaq Ali, 70, and his wife Zameela, 68. They were beaten with lathis before being fired with bullets in front of their house in Mahuli village of Bulandshahr district, they added.

Those injured from both sides have been admitted to the local hospital where condition of the two was stated to be critical, officials said, adding that no one has been arrested so far.

“Some 20 people who were carrying lathis and stones attacked us outside our house Monday afternoon. My parents rushed to save us but were shot at and died,” said Rahool, the son of the deceased couple.

According to the police, the father of the main accused, Shaukeen Ahmed, a resident of the same village, was brutally attacked by Ishaq’s father 22 years ago, leaving the victim severely injured. The rivalry continued and Shaukeen and his accomplices allegedly tried to murder Ishaq three years ago, they said.

“We have deployed adequate police force in the village as a precautionary measure and have collected the CCTV footage to identify the assailants,” said Poornima Singh, Deputy SP of Bulandshahr.
